Death of Pregnant Elephant after Chomping Pineapple Filled with Firecrackers

A wild pregnant elephant died at the Velliyar River in Malappuram. She chewed the pineapple filled with firecrackers and the explosion broke her jaws. This tragic death is reported from the Fringe areas of Kerala’s Silent Valley Forest.

What Officials said…

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Surendra Kumar told PTI, “Her jaw was broken and she was unable to eat after she chewed the pineapple and it exploded in her mouth.

It is certain that she was offered the pineapple filled with crackers to eliminate her.”

Emotional note by a forest officer

“When we saw her she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die. She took the Jalasamadhi in the river in a standing position.”

Government’s Action

“Strict action will be taken against culprits responsible for killing a pregnant elephant, ” Kerala forest minister K Raju told PTI on June 4.

“Strict action will be taken against those who are responsible for killing the pregnant elephant. Forest department is probing the case and the culprits will be brought to book”, said Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala CM.
